Il dipinto, in buono stato di conservazione, fu acquistato nell’800 da Luigi Legnani che, insieme con Gian Giacomo Poldi Pezzoli, rilevò alcuni Ghislandi dai conti Albani a Bergamo, con il suo pendant Ritratto di Paola Josefa Calepio Albani (v. scheda 134); è pervenuto all’attuale collezione per via ereditaria familiare. Reca al centro a destra un foglio con la scritta in caratteri minuscoli: «Joan Dominicus Albanus / Comes / Eques Cesareus in Ser.mo Venetiarum / Dominio Equitum Cataphractorum / Ductor et a S. M. Innocentio Papa / XIII, nec non a S.S.D.N.P.P. / Benedicto XIII inter Honorarios a Cubicolo Viros et / Familiares ascriptus / anno 1724». Figlio del conte Giovanni II Albani e della nobile Lelia Poncini, Giovanni Domenico contrasse nel 1718 con Paola Josefa Calepio promessa di matrimonio (documento nell’archivio Suardo a Cicola, Armadio Archivio Calepio, primo, Cancello 10, Colto 27, Istromenti e Atti Nuziali 1526-1733), la cui copia conforme ho potuto consultare grazie alla cortesia del prof. Emilio Sioli Legnani e viene qui parzialmente trascritta: «Al nome del Signore IDDIO - La mattina delli 20 ottobre 1718... Essendosi trattato e concluso, così cooperando lo Spirito Santo, di contrarsi matrimonio tra la Nob. Dama la Sig. Contessa Paola figlia del fu Generoso Cavagliere il Sig. Conte Trusardo conti di Calepio Feudatario della Valle Calepio e Pertinenze e della Nob. Donna la Sig.ra Contessa Grandilia Martinengo Colleoni Condomina di Urago e relitta d’esso Sig. Conte Trusardo da una; et il Generoso Cavaliere Conte Gio Domenico Albano Cameriere d’onore e famigliare di N. S. Clemente XImo per Divina Provvidenza Papa dall’altra; ambi Nobili di questa Città e di Brescia, secondo i riti di S. R. Chiesa et ordini del Sacro Concilio di Trento, con la dote, contradote e patti infrascritti, di che volendo le parti ne consti pubblico documento, quindi è che: Personalmente constituiti avanti di me Nodaro, secondo Nodari e testimoni infrascritti, la detta nob. Dama la Contessa Paola Conti di Calepio col consenso autorità e presenza della Nob. Donna Signora contessa Grandilia Martinengo Conti di Calepio di Lei madre e tutrice e delli generosi Cavalieri li sigg. Co: Co: Marc’Antonio e Celestino Conti di Calepio di Lei fratelli ha promesso e promette di ricevere in suo sposo e consorte il prefato il Sig. Co: Domenico Albani».&lt;br /&gt;
Il Tassi (II, p. 69) menziona i due ritratti subito dopo aver ricordato il Ritratto del Bruntino e il Ritratto di Giacomo Carrara: «Della stessa maniera sono pure li ritratti del Co: Gio. Domenico Albano, e della Contessa Paola sua consorte». Se si attribuisce alla frase del Tassi un valore di indicazione cronologica, questa non solo contrasta con la data delle scritte presenti in entrambi i ritratti e certo coeve, poiché costituiscono parte integrante dei dipinti, ma anche con i caratteri stilistici effettivamente consoni ad una datazione intorno al 1724.&lt;br /&gt;
Né si può attribuire all’espressione «della stessa maniera» il senso di un’indicazione stilistica e tipologica, poiché questi ritratti di parata appartengono a una tipologia completamente diversa da quel conte Carrara e del Bruntino. L’unica spiegazione è allora costituita dall’ipotesi di una svista o di un errore del Tassi. Il dipinto fu esposto a Milano nel 1910 (n. 178).&lt;br /&gt;
